The hub's improved seal design means better durability on rough terrain. The genius of the ZM2 hub is how we achieved quicker engagement. This hub system works with 12 pawls, in 4 groups of 3, on a 33-tooth ratchet ring. The 33 teeth make the ring strong with pickup that's reliable and consistent. The 4 groups of 3 pawls are staggered, meaning there are always 3 pawls engaging at any time, which boosts durability. The ZM2 also has higher load transmission capability. In designing an upgraded hubset for our pro-proven Firecrest wheel lineup, we turned to our engineering colleagues at SRAM's development center in Schweinfurt, Germany. The result is the ZR1 hubsets for disc wheels. This hubset features better seal design for improved durability and quicker response with 66 points of engagement. Our engineers spent more than two years developing the ZR1. Proving the durability of the hubset included more than 58,500km of test riding, part of 3,222 hours of total testing. The ZR1 features key technology from Zipp's Cognition hubs. The seal design is the same as the Cognition, with a large dust cap at the base of the driver body and better bearing seals for more protection. The bearing size also is the same as the Cognition, although the Cognition uses a premium bearing. The six pawls are offset to work in two groups of three pawls. There are always three pawls engaging. This design creates a quick engagement feel, with 66 points of engagement. The driver body is designed so pawls stay in place for disassembly to make service convenient. Zipp hubs are designed to use J-bend spokes, the most popular type of spokes today. The Pro 4 proved to be one of the most reliable and versatile hubs on the market. The Pro 5 builds on this with improvements throughout, offering the right balance between speed of pick-up, load capacity, durability and drag. One of the key design objectives for the Pro 5 was the reduction of drag in the drive mechanism. This has real world riding benefits and was achieved by upgrading the sealing with a new zero drag labyrinth seal, and an improved ratchet and pawl system, with new springs. Both greatly reduce drag as well as increase durability and load capacity when compared with the Pro 4. Another big update comes in an increase in the points of engagement (from 44 to 108) using an offset 6 pawl freehub design, where 3 pawls are engaged at any time. This achieves the right balance between speed of pick-up, load capacity, drag & durability, and in real-world terms gives a speedy feel on the trail whilst keeping crank movement to an acceptable level without compromising the free running of the hub or its reliability. Externally the shell takes a new profile to add stiffness without adding weight whilst housing a new axle design enabling the use of bigger bearings in a better arrangement to fit the latest freehub standards whilst increasing load capacity. As with every product made at Hope durability and longevity are key. Everything about the Pro 5 has been considered, and tested to work in the worst conditions possible from seals to bearings....And eventually if something does wear out the Pro 5 is fully serviceable and rebuildable with simple tools, or if you need to change drivetrain standards one hub works with everything. So swapping freehubs is easily done, and changing end caps to suit different frame and fork axle standards future proofing your wheels. Completely new for the Pro 5 is the option of Centrelock disc fitting and an e-bike specific hub that comes with a freehub tailor made for the stresses and strains of e-bike use. With many DH riders using short 7 speed cassettes, we saw a potentially missed opportunity to improve the strength of rear wheels. Our new DH rear hub moves the drive-side spoke flange out to the shortened cassettes, allowing a far wider flange spacing over a standard hub, leading to a stiffer wheel build. The hub will accept either our 7 speed cassette, a custom 7 speed cassette built up from individual sprockets,or a Sram 7 speed DH cassette.
